In 1998, we launched our own free email service. Traffic continued to grow, averaging around 80,000 accesses per day. The biggest breakthrough came on September 30, 1998, when the 100,000 accesses per day mark was surpassed for the first time. At that time, we became the most visited Czech website. Novinky.cz also took its first steps, originally conceived as an entertainment server where people could post their own contributions. Over the years, it transformed into the news server we know today. Interestingly, in the late 90s, servers like Novinky.cz were referred to as “e-zines,” or electronic magazines. Their appearance was significantly different back then. There were few photographs, mainly for two reasons. Photography was almost exclusively done on analog material and then scanned into digital form, and the low transfer speed couldn’t handle large volumes of data. Most connections were still made via dial-up modems over telephone lines.
