1997

We quickly established a strong position on the Czech internet scene, as evidenced by the increase in daily visits to our homepage to 50,000 accesses per day. We celebrated our first anniversary by launching our own full-text search engine called Kompas, which allowed queries with Czech diacritics and syntax. It indexed 1.2 million pages and handled Czech encoding. In addition to the search engine, we launched services such as Lidé.cz, the first catalog of internet users, the news server Seznam Dnes, and the online store iShop. It is worth noting that in 1997, the search engine Google was just emerging, and the global market was served by the now-defunct search engine AltaVista. From this perspective, Seznam.cz is undoubtedly one of the oldest search engines in the world.
